REDs

[REDs] 에 수집된 각기 다른 물체들은 그들을 구성하는 수많은 구성들 중 하나인 ‘빨강RED’이란 속성을 갖고 있다는 이유만으로 함께 분류되어 특정 집단에 위치시켜진다. 그리고 그 집단에 대해 인위적으로 설정된 특정 형태인 ‘가루형태’를 강요당한다. 물체들이 “’빨강RED’은 가루형태이다.”라는 인위적 설정에 따라, 물체 각자의 다양한 속성들은 모두 무시된 채 획일적으로 갈려 나란히 전시되고 있다. 옆에 부착된 라벨을 보기 전에는, 모두 나란히 비슷한 모습으로 정갈하게 담겨있는 것으로 보이나, 라벨에 적힌 글자를 읽어보면, 이들이 전혀 다른 속성을 가진 물체들이었음을 확인할 수 있다. 나란히 전시된 모습은 마치 사회의 통념에 따라 개조되고 변형된, 획일적으로 사회화된 개인들을 보는 듯하다. 변형된 후 일률적이고 정갈하게 정리된 수많은 개체들이 나열돼 있는 모습은 “’빨강RED’은 가루형태이다.”라는 믿음을 더욱 공고하게 만든다. 이는 사회가 원하는 모습으로 개조되고 변형된 수많은 사람들의 모습이 또다시 사회적 통념을 더욱 공고하게 만드는 사회구조의 작동 원리, 그리고 그 은폐에 대한 은유이다. ㅡ Different objects collected in ‘REDs’ are grouped together and placed into a category, simply because of their ‘red’ hue – a trait that only makes up one of the many attributes that form their respective identities. The objects are then ground into a powder, an artificial form forced onto them in order to impose their predetermined group identity. Due to an artificially determined rule that demands “RED” be in a powder form, the various properties of each object are overlooked and ground into oblivion, just to be divided into identical packages that are displayed side by side. At first glance, they seem to be monochromatic substances of identical properties, but the labels on the side reveal that they were once objects vastly different from one another. The uniformity of their display evokes observing our own reality, where individuals have been modified and indoctrinated into cookie-cutter members of society, shaped by prevailing social conventions. The sight of such a uniform and neatly organized display of modified objects further cements the notion that ‘RED is a powder’. As individuals are molded into conventionally acceptable versions of themselves, they in turn and by design, reaffirm and go on to further enforce the societal conventions that they once found restrictive.
