artist statement

나는 사회속에서 구조가 개개인에게 가하는 거대한 폭력, 그리고 그 은폐에 대해 관심이 있다. 내가 경험한 우리 사회는 그대로 놓인 자연스러운 개개인의 존재들에 대해 정상이라는 기준을 인위적으로 설정하고, 이에 따라 한정된 체계로 분류하는 사회, 그리고 그 과정에서 배제되는 이들에게는 폭력을 가하는 구조의 사회이다. 나는 작업을 통해 개인을 지우고, 개조하고, 새로이 구성하여 주입하는 이 구조의 폭력 과정, 그리고 그 은폐에 대해 이야기하고자 한다. Bong Yeawon's work explores the mass violence, and the ensuing cover-ups, that societal structures impose on individuals. Our society, as it has been experienced by the artist, is one that sets aritificial standards of normality for individuals who would otherwise be existing as their natural selves. Such restrictions put them into limited categories of class and hierarchy, and those who lie outside of the boundaries of normality are met with violence. Through their work, Bong dissects the many ways in which these structures cover-up, erase, modify and indoctrinate the individual.
